Molly Tuttle Opens for Old Crow Medicine Show at Roadrunner: A Night to Remember

Allston, MA – July 21, 2024

On July 21st, the incomparable Molly Tuttle and her band took the stage at Roadrunner in Allston, MA, setting the tone for an unforgettable evening as they opened for Old Crow Medicine Show. This marked the second time I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Molly perform live, and once again, her artistry did not disappoint.

The set began with a minor hiccup—some technical difficulties with the band’s in-ear monitors. Yet what could have been a frustrating delay was transformed into a moment of intimacy and spontaneity. Rather than wait idly, Molly and her band gathered close, forming a tight circle at the front of the stage. They launched into their opening number, performing completely acoustically while their crew worked behind the scenes to resolve the issue. The result was a delightfully unique and genuine start to the set, a testament to the group’s professionalism and camaraderie. In those few minutes, the audience was treated to something rare: the raw, unfiltered sound of supremely talented musicians simply making music together.

The setlist kicked off with the fiddle-filled “Over the Line” in this impromptu acoustic arrangement—a special treat that highlighted the band’s instrumental chemistry and Molly’s warm, inviting stage presence. Once the technical issues were resolved and the in-ears were back in action, the band wasted no time ramping up the energy. The rest of their set was delivered with the electrified precision and spirited flare that Molly Tuttle fans have come to expect.

Molly and her band delighted the crowd with a mix of originals and unexpected covers. Standout originals like “Crooked Tree,” “The River Knows,” and “Dooley’s Farm” showcased Molly’s masterful songwriting—each song delivered with heartfelt vocals and dazzling musicianship. The band’s dynamic interplay was especially palpable, with each member contributing to a sound that was both cohesive and exhilarating.

A particularly memorable aspect of the set was the band’s bluegrass-infused takes on songs from outside the genre. Their cover of the Rolling Stones’ “She’s a Rainbow” brought a burst of color and joy, while their rendition of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Good For You” was nothing short of inspired, reimagining the pop anthem with banjo-driven fervor. These covers not only demonstrated the band’s versatility but also Molly’s unique gift for making any song wholly her own.

As the opening act for Old Crow Medicine Show, Molly Tuttle’s performance was the perfect warm-up. Her set was filled with the kind of energy, musical prowess, and good-natured charm that left the crowd buzzing with anticipation for the rest of the night. The audience was left with the sense that they had witnessed something truly special—a fusion of tradition and innovation, delivered by one of the most compelling young voices in acoustic music today.

In short, Molly Tuttle’s set at Roadrunner was a testament to her skill, adaptability, and infectious enthusiasm. Whether overcoming technical snafus or putting her own spin on classic songs, Molly continues to prove why she’s one of the most exciting artists in modern bluegrass. Her performance was, without a doubt, the perfect start to an incredible show.
